Aquaphilia

ExtraIntensity
What it is

Aquaphilia is a sexual attraction centred on water — the word literally means 'water lover.' It covers arousal from being in or under water, from watching others swim, bathe, or hold their breath below the surface, and from sex in pools, baths, showers, or the sea. For some it's simply the sensual novelty of wet, weightless bodies; for others the underwater, breath-holding element is the real charge. Because it can pull toward genuinely risky breath-holding, it's usually classed as a paraphilia. Handled sensibly, though, much of it is just playful, watery fun.

Why people are into it

Water adds novelty, sensuality, and a floaty, skin-on-skin closeness that dry sex doesn't. For those drawn to the underwater or breath-holding side, there's an added edge of vulnerability and surrender to the element.

In practice

A couple might fool around in the shower, bath, or a private pool, enjoying the slippery, buoyant sensations. Enthusiasts of the underwater side may kiss or play while submerged, or watch a partner move and hold their breath beneath the surface.

Safety & consent

Water washes away natural lubrication and can irritate, so use a silicone-based lube; water does not prevent pregnancy or STIs. Underwater or breath-holding play carries real drowning risk — never do it alone, keep it short, stay where you can stand or surface instantly, and never mix it with alcohol. Pool chemicals and lake bacteria can also cause infections.
