Asphyxiation
Asphyxiation — also called breath play or erotic asphyxiation — is arousal from restricting oxygen through choking, smothering, or strangulation, often timed to orgasm. Clinically it's known as asphyxiophilia; done to oneself while masturbating it's called autoerotic asphyxiation. The draw is the lightheaded oxygen dip and the flood as breathing returns, which can intensify climax. It ranges from a hand resting on the throat to genuine airway restriction — and the further it goes, the more dangerous it becomes. This is widely considered one of the highest-risk kinks there is.
The appeal is the intense lightheaded high, the surrender of control, and the way a brush with danger can sharpen orgasm. The trust required to let a partner control your breath can also feel profoundly intimate.
In partnered play it usually means a hand placed on the neck or over the mouth for very short moments, with a clear non-verbal signal (like tapping out) since the person can't speak. Many people drawn to the idea choose safer stand-ins instead — a hand resting on the throat without real pressure, or choking as pure roleplay.
There is no fully safe way to restrict breathing — blackout, stroke, cardiac arrest, and death can happen with no warning and even after play ends. Harm reduction only: never, ever do it alone; never use ligatures or anything that stays tight on its own; keep any pressure brief and to the sides of the neck, never the windpipe; agree a tap-out signal; and stop instantly at any sign of trouble. Safer alternatives like neck stroking or roleplay give much of the charge without the lethal risk.
