Caning

BDSMIntensity
What it is

Caning is impact play using a cane — a long, thin, semi-rigid rod — to strike a partner's body for sharp, stinging pain. Traditionally canes are wood or rattan, though modern ones may be plastic, fiberglass, or metal, each with a different bite. The thin rod delivers a concentrated, lingering sting quite unlike the thud of a paddle or flogger, and can leave welts or lines. It's considered a more advanced, more intense impact practice. Sadists and dedicated pain players are its most common enthusiasts.

Why people are into it

For the receiver, the precise, escalating sting and the marks left behind can be a deep, cathartic pain-play high and a proof of endurance. For the giver, a cane offers exacting control over exactly how much sensation each stroke delivers.

In practice

The top warms the area first with a hand or thicker implements, then delivers cane strokes to the fleshy target zones, building intensity gradually and checking in. Strokes are usually measured and deliberate rather than wild, with the receiver bracing between them.

Safety & consent

Strike only fleshy, muscular areas — the buttocks and the backs of the thighs — and never the kidneys, lower back, spine, tailbone, joints, or anywhere near the head. Warm up first, build gradually, and watch for broken skin. A cane carries more force than it looks, so a slow start prevents deep bruising or lasting damage; keep a safeword and stop at any warning sign.
