Collaring

BDSMIntensity
What it is

Collaring is the act of a submissive formally committing to a dominant, marked by wearing a collar. Far more than an accessory, the collar is one of the most significant symbols in BDSM — a visible sign of the bond, trust, and power exchange between the two. For many it carries as much weight as a wedding ring, and some mark it with a formal collaring ceremony not unlike a marriage. Collars can signal different stages, from a tentative early collar to a permanent one. Wearing it publicly declares who someone belongs to.

Why people are into it

For the submissive, being collared is a source of pride, belonging, and security — proof of being claimed and valued. For the dominant, offering a collar is an act of commitment and ownership. The ritual gives the relationship weight and definition.

In practice

The dominant places the collar on the submissive, often in a deliberate ceremony with spoken vows or agreed terms. Day to day, the submissive may wear it during scenes, at events, or continuously, treating putting it on and taking it off as meaningful moments.

Safety & consent

Emotionally weighty more than physically risky: talk through what the collar means and commits each of you to before offering or accepting one, so expectations match. For a collar worn continuously, make sure it's comfortable and can't tighten or catch, and never use a locked or bondage collar for sleep or unsupervised wear.

Good to know

The BDSM community recognises several collar types that signal a relationship's stage — a collar of consideration (early, tentative), a training collar, and a formal or permanent collar (the deepest commitment). Some are worn discreetly day-to-day as a subtle symbolic piece rather than obvious bondage gear.
