Dominance

BDSMIntensity
What it is

Dominance is one half of D/s (dominance and submission), the power-exchange heart of BDSM. The dominant partner takes control — of the scene, the body, the rules, the pace — and derives pleasure from that authority, while the submissive consensually hands it over. It can be physical, psychological, or both, and range from bedroom-only bossiness to a total, 24/7 dynamic. Crucially, real dominance rests on consent and trust, not coercion — the submissive's yielding is a gift that can be withdrawn. It's less about any single act than an overall dynamic of who leads and who follows.

Why people are into it

For the dominant, leading and being trusted with a partner's surrender is deeply satisfying — a blend of control, responsibility, and being desired in that role. For the submissive, yielding to a confident, caring dominant is freeing and thrilling, which is why the two roles fit together.

In practice

The dominant directs — giving orders, setting rules, controlling the body and the scene — while the submissive follows. In practice this looks like anything from commanding in bed, to protocols and rituals, to an ongoing lifestyle dynamic, all shaped by what the pair negotiated.

Safety & consent

Follow the standard frameworks: negotiate desires, roles, and hard limits beforehand, keep a safeword or traffic-light signal that instantly pauses play, and work within SSC / RACK (Safe, Sane, Consensual / Risk-Aware Consensual Kink). Consent should be FRIES — freely given, reversible, informed, enthusiastic, specific — and every scene closes with aftercare.

Good to know

Despite what pop culture (Fifty Shades and the like) suggests, healthy dominance isn't cruelty or control-freak behaviour — it's a negotiated, consensual exchange where the dominant's authority exists precisely because the submissive grants it. The best dominants are attentive and responsible, not simply demanding.
