Flogging (flagellation)

BDSMIntensity
What it is

Flogging is impact play using a flogger — a handle with multiple soft tails (falls), usually leather or suede — swung to strike a partner's body. Though flagellation began as real punishment (and still exists as such in some places), play floggers are made to feel good: a warm, thuddy rhythm rather than sharp pain. The many tails spread the impact, making it one of the more approachable and sensual impact tools. It ranges from a light, meditative caress to hard, driving blows. It's a BDSM staple and a common entry point into impact play.

Why people are into it

A flogger's spread-out thud builds a deep, rhythmic, almost trance-like intensity that many find cathartic and endorphin-rich. For the receiver it's surrender and rising sensation; for the top, the rhythm, aim, and control are their own satisfying skill.

In practice

The top warms the area with lighter strokes, then builds a rhythm across the fleshy target zones — shoulders, back, buttocks, thighs — varying speed and force and checking in. Floggers can be trailed and teased across skin as well as swung, mixing sensation.

Safety & consent

Aim for muscular areas — the upper back (over the shoulder blades), buttocks, and thighs — and avoid the spine, kidneys, lower back, neck, and joints. Warm up and build gradually, keep the tips from wrapping around onto tender areas, and watch for broken skin. Keep a safeword and check in, since heavy flogging can bruise.
